DU requires all students to take a foreign language to fulfill common curriculum requirements. For specific information about the common curriculum, visit https://www.du.edu/registrar/new-student/common-curriculum.

FOLA requires that all students complete the first-year sequence of a language (levels 1001-1002-1003) OR take one course above the 1000 level (2001 or above) if the student tests out of the first year with the language placement exam (https://liberalarts.du.edu/cwlc/language-testing).

Depending on your major or degree program, you may have additional requirements or exemptions. Check with your major or other academic advisor to ensure that you understand your specific situation.

For more information on possible exemptions from this requirement, see the article “Exemptions from the Foreign Language Requirement (FOLA)”.
