REQUIREMENTS

Beginning Fall 2022, students wishing to pursue German as a major declare a major in Languages, Literatures & Cultures with a concentration in German.

The curriculum consists of 44 credit hours at the 2001 level or higher. Students are required to take 8 of those credit hours from CLTR 2100 and CLTR 2200. Find descriptions of these Languages, Literatures and Cultures core courses here.

36 credits consist of approved courses beyond GERM 1003. Four of these 36 credits must be from GERM 1416. No fewer than eight of these 36 credits must be from 3000-level German courses. Students may count one additional course in English on German culture, history or literature toward the concentration.

RECOMMENDATIONS

GERM 1416: German Civilization, taught in English, ought to be taken as early as possible. This course serves as a foundation for further studies, providing a thorough overview of Germany's (intellectual) history from the late 18th century to today.

When possible, students who have completed the intermediate sequence (GERM 2001, 2002 and 2003) are advised to continue their studies with the following "bridge" courses before enrolling in upper-level seminars:

  • GERM 2100: Conversation and Composition
  • GERM 2350: German Film

NOTE: For students who declared a major in German prior to Fall 2022, your requirements are determined by the bulletin year in which you entered the program. An archive of DU undergraduate bulletin publications can be found here.
